Lithgow Halloween Carnivale Street Party

This month our team came together for a day of training, and while the topic wasn’t an easy one to cover, it was an important one—domestic violence and how it affects residential tenancies. Sadly, this is a reality that does sometimes come up in our work, and we feel it’s vital to be as informed and prepared as possible to support those affected.

We began the day by reviewing the current Residential Tenancies legislation, making sure everyone of our property managers is across the requirements and processes involved. We also drew on real-life examples that our offices have dealt with, so the training was practical and directly connected to the challenges we may face.

For the second half of the day, we invited a local specialist organisation to share their knowledge. They gave us practical tools for how to communicate sensitively, identify warning signs, and support clients in difficult circumstances. This was incredibly valuable for our team and will help us handle these situations with both professionalism and empathy.

One important takeaway for landlords is the role of landlord protection insurance in these situations. When a tenancy ends due to domestic violence, there can be unexpected challenges for landlords. Having landlord protection insurance in place is critical—it provides a safety net and peace of mind for your investment.

Finally, it’s worth remembering that in any domestic violence situation, the safety and wellbeing of tenants and their children always come first. These are people going through life-changing challenges, and our role—as property managers and landlords—is to handle these matters with care, compassion, and understanding.
